Millstream takes its name from the mill-race that drove the watermill in Stellenbosch during the seventeenth century. The stream which has lush tree-lined banks, divides the lanes of traffic and lends a rural air to this part of town.
Visitors cannot believe that such peace and tranquility can exist so close to the town centre. Most amenities are within walking distance: the Van Der Stel sportsfield is a few minutes’ walk, town centre with numerous restaurants and shops within ten minutes’ walk and the University a similar distance. |

The close location of Stellenbosch Tourist Information bureau makes Millstream an ideal launching pad for tours of the wine region. There are a variety of wine tours, ranging from the hop-on-hop-off bus, which allows visitors to stay at each of five winelands for as long as they wish during the day, right through to indiviually guided tours, which can be conducted in a variety of languages.
For the history lover, Stellenbosch has a town-centre museum that displays architecture and lifestyles of several eras, while the Burgerhouse and the Toy and Miniature museums are within minutes’ reach. Regular walking tours can be arranged which introduce the visitor to the history of Stellenbosch, as well as guided twilight walks and even a ghost walk! One of the local farms offers a full-moon walk which is quite spectacular. |
